Since Sir Arthur Conan O’ Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” has been off copyright, several screen adaptations have been produced. There are the fun and cinematic version played by Robert Downey Jr. that spawned two movies while BBC’s “Sherlock” that had a more intellectual take, took the world by storm and spawned four seasons.
In the latest news, Netflix has bought the rights to produce the young adult fiction series of detective novels by Nancy Springer called “The Enola Holmes Mysteries.” The book centers on the fourteen-year-old sister of an already-famous Sherlock Holmes, twenty years her senior. Enola Holmes will be played by Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill will play as Sherlock Holmes and Sam Claflin as Mycroft Holmes.
Carving Her Name
Neglected by her brothers who plot to send her into boarding school, Enola Holmes ventures to London to search for her disappeared mother. While in London, she gets caught up with the kidnapping of a young marquess while trying to escape the clutches of murderous villains as well as avoiding her overprotective brothers. She later opens a business under the alias of “Dr Leslie T. Ragostin.” This business would allow her to be deeply involved in plenty of mysteries like The Case of the Left Handed Lady, The Bizarre Bouquets, The Peculiar Pink Fan, the Cryptic Crinoline, and the Gypsey Goodbye. She solves her cases by putting on disguises and recollecting details using her sketches of the people involved in her case. And even though she would develop an affection for her older brothers, she would still flee from them because she values her freedom.
Her name was inspired by the town of Enola, Pennsylvania which was near the place where Nancy Springer grew up.
While the plot of the Netflix feature film is still not released, we can only hope that “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown will portray our bright and endearing Enola very well. From controlling matter to having the mind of a brilliant detective, Millie is shaping up to dominate streams once again. Enola Holmes is set to release in September 2020
